Register of licenses for swamplands, 1873-1916.

Volume 3 of record group 57-31 consists of government records (1873-1916) documenting people who bought swamp land from the state of Michigan pursuant to Public Act 229 of 1859. The records are from the Michigan State Land Office. Data includes date license issued, license number, name of person who settled the public land, basic legal description of the land (township, range section), county, and final disposition of land (whether surrendered, abandoned or kept). Primarily documents northern counties of the Lower Peninsula.

The State Land Office Board was created by Public Act 155 of 1937. It was to consist of two members appointed by the governor, and the auditor general, who was member and chairman.
